Interview with Amy Reich

Barry Bruder: So tell me, what do you do when you work in people's homes?

Amy Reich: My practice is called "LIVING SPACES," harmonious home solutions. I help create balanced and supportive living and work spaces. A lot of insight shows up when I go into a person's home and help them to see their space in a different way.

B.B.: How do you do this?

A.R.: I use Integrative Feng Shui – applying techniques of Compass and Bagua styles, along with symbology, space & clutter clearing, and Vaastu Shastra (Indian Design). I work with the client to bring a greater sense of harmony & balance to the home or office. Feng Shui is both an art and science that dates back several thousand years in China. According to the direction your building sits, the year it was built, and the current year, I work with its underlying energy to balance out the space at deep levels. This is a very personalized process, definitely not "one size fits all."

B.B.: How long is the training process?

A.R.: It is an on-going, lifelong learning process. The initial training was concentrated over a period of a year. I have studied and practiced
various Feng Shui styles for the past four years.

B.B.: What are the benefits of having a consultation with you?

A.R.: The greatest benefit is that the work brings harmony and balance into your environment and awareness of how space affects you. Our
environment is a reflection of us and has a great impact on our lives
including our health and relationships.

Short range benefits include:

~Cleaner, clearer and lighter space.
~Renewal of purpose for all of your belongings.
~A space that supports your current life and releases the past.

Long range benefits:

~Space for opportunities, people, and money to flow into your life.
~Increased harmony between family & friends, at home or in the office.
~Clearer thinking with less distraction.

B.B.: Tell us about Space Clearing. What is it?

A.R.: Space clearing involves putting things back in their proper place. On a general level it's about balancing, purifying, and cleaning the energy in your environment. It involves making your home a sanctuary with ritual and intent. This can help us to connect with our space, sensing it, moving through the space, feeling it with enhanced awareness.

Ritual can be as simple as lighting a candle or burning incense with intent for the home in supporting the occupants’ dreams and desires. Sweeping and vacuuming creates a shift and renewal of energy in the home. The majority of our culture has lost connection with the land and other people. This work helps bring us back to this important way of being. The work that I do assists in bringing fresh energy into one's life. Chi, or prana, is life-force energy. It's desirous to have the chi flowing smoothly without obstructions in your house. One of the big problems that people have is with clutter. Clutter obstructs the flow of chi in the home and also carries stagnant energy, outdated memories, and associations.

B.B.: How long does it take to work this out in someone's house?

A.R.: It really depends on the situation. Clutter needs to be addressed first. It's the client's individual responsibility to address the clutter, which is often not an easy task. There's a fine balance between what I can help an individual with and what they need to do on their own. The issue here is all about the relationship between the people and their stuff or deeper underlying issues. Sometimes by having an outside witness to this relationship is enough to motivate a person to take charge and clear their clutter or make other changes. In houses that don't have clutter we can address other areas immediately.

B.B.: What do you do when you arrive at a client's house?

A.R.: I look at the space, discuss how the occupant feels about their space, and what they want to enhance or bring into their life. I evaluate the space and offer suggestions or changes that can help support the occupants' life goals by creating a supportive environment. A visual picture of the space is created using a floorplan and compass direction of the building. Some work is done onsite and a portion is done off site.

B.B.: Please give us some real life examples of immediate benefits that clients have recognized, felt or experienced as a result of your consultation work with them.

A.R.: Symbology and career support

I have a client who had imagery on the walls in her home office that were related to her former career and were not supportive of her new life’s direction. I pointed this out to her and asked her if she even noticed those images anymore, which I suspected were affecting her on a subconscious level. She had been having a difficult time focusing on her new work, although it was exciting to her. She decided to remove these outdated images and replace them with pictures and objects related to her new career. Her view of how impactful symbology in the living space can be has changed for her immediate benefit.

Symbology, career support and self-esteem

Each time this client opened up the doors on her hutch desk, she blocked her diplomas and credentials. In addition, they were in danger of being hit by the doors each time they were opened, creating the potential for scratching or even breaking the frames. I helped her to see this and suggested that it's time to advance herself, to proudly display who she is and what she does, to stop hiding herself in the corner. The other available location for these credentials just happened to be in accordance with a Feng Shui suggestion. Now her credentials are openly displayed on a wall for all to see. With specific Feng Shui knowledge I was able to suggest a really beneficial location to place the diplomas. This boosted my client's self-esteem immensely.

Letting go of the past to make room for the new

I saw this client prior to her divorce. She had big plans to remodel and redecorate the house, which we had discussed when we last met. One year after the divorce she had only made a few changes, especially in the room that was her former husband's office. The day before I came over she was evaluating her office and noticed that there was a computer cable running from her office into her former husband's office. This was a cable that connected the two rooms and computers. She started to tug and pull on it until it was this simple act as a releasing of her connection to her husband on a symbolic level, freeing her to invite new things into her life. She got so excited and empowered as we discussed this. Now I believe that she will be able to make the bigger changes in her home that support her current life.

B.B.: A person's sitting on the fence, things aren’t going quite right in their home or office. They have your card, have read your interview yet they keep procrastinating to take the time to set up a consultation and have the experience. Why should they do this RIGHT NOW? What would you say to them?

A.R.: What I'd invite that person to think about is this: Taking action NOW will bring about the changes and support you need to propel you ahead. I invite you to experience this work for yourself. It will help stop the procrastination, create mental clarity, clear blocks and stagnant energy in the home and in you, the occupant.

With your willingness and patience, forward movementis possible. Feng Shui, along with the other techniques I employ, will help energize and empower you. I love this work and helping people to take action. By replacing chaos and disorder, I assist you in seeing and experiencing your space in a new way and opening up yourself to an abundant life filled with wonder, joy, peace, love, energy, vitality, health and harmony.

B.B.: Tell us a little bit about the yoga that you practice, teach and invite other people to experience . Please share with us some of the benefits that you help people access through Kundalini Yoga.

A.R.: Kundalini Yoga is an all encompassing style of yoga. This ancient technology helps remove blocks from the subconscious, and tunes up the whole being while opening up the flow of energy freely within our bodies. We are then allowed to experience our higher consciousness and to live fully.

Kundalini Yoga tunes up the glandular and nervous systems, energizes and strengthens us, and enhances intuition which in turn helps us in our daily choices.

By becoming aware of our habits we empower ourselves and change
our lives. This practice is very transforming. Most of all it helps us access the joy that lives within us all. I believe that when we practice yoga, we honor ourselves by taking time for ourselves. This can only serve to enhance and impact our lives on many levels.

Classes include postures (asana), breathwork (pranayama), chanting with (naad yoga), meditation and relaxation. Kundalini Yoga is a great complement to all styles of Hatha Yoga. For practicing students, some postures will be familiar, others will be new and different!

I invite you to try this exercise at home:

Removing clutter is an important part of fine tuning our environment. This step is necessary before deeper level methods can be used.

THE CLUTTER TEST

1. Does it lift my energy when I think about it or look at it?

2. Do I absolutely love it?

3. Is it genuinely useful FOR ME?

Decide now that everything in your home has to have a valid purpose. Be strong and let go of things that no longer serve a purpose in your life. Tell yourself that it's safe to let go of. Be quick and decisive.

If you need assistance with this, hire the help of a friend or professional.
